Search Quality Rating

Search Engine Land reports that Google has contracted with an international group of about 10,000 "Search Quality Raters" "Search Quality Raters " who evaluate the initial search results on various topics.

Google maintains a set of Guidelines which is perhaps 200 pages in length. This provides a standard for these evaluations. George Nguyen reports on Jennifer Slegg's presentation summarizing the basic concepts behind these guidelines. Marie Haynes gave a video presentation on quality rating for SEOs.

Annalee Newitz notes that Google contracts with a couple employment agencies to provide quality raters - they are not Google employees.

Google Search Results Now Include Approximate Results

Daniel Gilbert reports on a change in Google's search algorithm , noting "Not content with making exact match keywords anything but exact, they’ve extended “same meaning” close variants to phrase and broad match modifier (BMM) keywords. Not only are plurals, stemmings, misspellings and changes to word order all fair game for your keywords, now implied words and synonyms in search terms will also trigger phrase and BMM." For those who pay to have their site show at the top of the result list, making search results less specific will require a greater expenditure to reach the same audience.

Google Search by Voice

Sharon Gaudin reports that Google is improving voice search . Gaudin paraphased Google Fellow Amit Singhai as saying "that future searches will be more like conversations with your computer or device, which also will be able to give you information before you even ask for it."

Gaudin notes that voice recognition inaccuracies have slowed adoption. She quotes consultant Patrick Moorhead as saying "Very few people rely on any smartphone voice products. They only will rely on them when the accuracy gets to 99%. Imagine if your keyboard only was accurate 95% of the time, meaning every five keys out of 100 were inaccurate. So this is a nice improvement, but until the complete user experience gets to 99% it won't really make a difference in adoption."
