Data Analysis Project Failures

Mary Branscombe explains the causes of common failures in data analysis projects :

  1. Assuming your data is ready to use — and all you need
  2. Not exploring your data set before starting work
  3. Expecting too much
  4. Not using a control group to test your new data model in action
  5. Starting with targets rather than hypotheses
  6. Letting your data model go stale
  7. Automating without monitoring the final outcome
  8. Forgetting the business experts
  9. Picking too complex a tool
  10. Reusing implementations that don’t fit your problem
  11. Misunderstanding fundamentals like causation and cross validation
  12. Underestimating what users can understand

Wire Heads

Lone Frank writes about the addictive nature of brain stimulation , which can result in individuals stimulating their happiness centers for hours at a time.

In 1980, Larry Niven began his science fiction novel The Ringworld Engineers with the protagonist as a wire addict. It is unfortunate that speculative fiction is becoming reality.

Female Voices

Eden Faithful considers the primarily feminine voices employed in artificial intelligence as reinforcing cultural subservience.

Faithful's criticism reminds me of the description of a household robot from a 1956 science fiction novel:

"That's why we called the monster 'Hired Girl' -- it brought back thoughts of the semi-slave immigrant girl who Grandma used to bully."

Heinlein, Robert A. (1956). The Door Into Summer. Fantasy and Science Fiction, 11(4), p. 17.

School Shootings

David French muses on the cause of school shootings .

Throughout U.S. history there have been a few insane individuals who have shot students and teachers in schools. Acts of insanity cannot easily be prevented. However,my own thought is that these sad events should not be receiving the massive publicity that seems to evoke copycat killings around the nation. To do so seems as irresponsible as yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre.
