Search Engine Colossus

Search Engine Colossus is a website with links to search engines originating from (or focused on) nations around the world. Leslie Starasta, Information Services Librarian at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, recommends this tool for cross-cultural research.

Murl Winters, Associate Library Director at Evangel University, recommends Phil Bradley's list of Country Based Search Engines.

Peek You

PeekYou is a new website for locating people. It harvests photos from blogs, phone numbers from the white pages, and text from other sources. Currently free, this product provided lots of results when I tried seeking old friends. The product is strongest at locating those with an online presence.

Ethical Issues Involving Search

Concerns are being raised that search tools like Amazon and Google are either restricting the availability of information on controversial subjects or retaining information on those doing search. One point of view is that a company can do what it wants within the constraints of law; others feel that special constraints should exist for firms that are monopolies and/or utilities.
