Exiting Poverty

Gillian White reviews Peter Temin's arguement that the U.S. is becoming a two-class state defined by income inequality. Temin's research indicates that it takes a generation for people to work themselves out of poverty, and that only if everything goes well.

Expertise and Professionalism

Alina Dizik suggests that young people should focus on developing skills, not credentials for a profession . One roadblock Dizik mentions is that many individuals develop their identity from profession, and would not be comfortable expanding their work outside the bounds of the narrow confines of the "profession" concept.

My take is that if a person needs ten thousand hours to gain expertise, then there is still a need for professions with a narrow, defined range of paractice. I would want a brain surgeon to have participated in hundreds of surgeries before working on my head.

Too Dumb to Fail

Matt K. Lewis wrote his book about the hijacking of the conservative agenda ( Too Dumb to Fail ) at the start of the previous election cycle. I found it provides a possible roadmap for returning conservatism to its roots: however, it had little impact in the 2016 election.

Lewis still maintians a blog.

Business Cards in a Digital Age

Paul McNamara muses on the resiliance of paper business cards in an age of digital equivilents.

McNamara notes that incompatible devices can be an issue with transferring data. Unmentioned is that fact that it is probably easier (and less off-putting in a crowded, jostling environment) to jot a note on the back of a business card than to bring out a device, load an application, and type in a note. I also think some individuals do not want strangers connecting to their devices, in case the digital business card is a trojan horse.
