Co-investment in Training

Patrick Thibodeau observes that IBM has required that certain employees make a co-investment in training in order to retain their technology positions. This involves a 10% cut in pay until the necessary skill attainments are met. IBM will pay the entire cost of their training. Thibodeau muses whether this will become a trend in the industry.

Data Information Literacy Training Being Developed With Institute of Museum and Library Services Funding

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is funding a research project among four research institutions to discern what data information literacy training is needed by graduate students to enable them to produce excellent research. The project aims to develop, implement and evaluate a data information literacy curriculum in conjunction with university faculty.

Microsoft Technet Subscriptions Ending

Joab Jackson reports that Microsoft will be eliminating TechNet Software Subscriptions . For about $200, this allowed students and developers to obtain sample copies of software.

Andy Patrizio believes Microsoft is eliminating the subscription option because of piracy and other abuse . Patrizio notes that Microsoft has created an evaluation center which should replace most of the functionality of the TechNet service, while eliminating some of the piracy opportunities.

Online Training

IT training is getting an extreme makeover according to ComputerWorld correspondent Cindy Waxer. She mentions video technology provided by sites such as Lynda.com is now targeting mobile users. She also gave examples of professional video production companies employed in content creation.

In the library field, the American Library Association has become a course provider for continuing education using online classroom technologies, including video. There are many free training videos on the web for user technology training which can be found using search engines.
