Confusing or Brilliant Android Update

J.R. Raphael expresses consternation that Google would release a desktop mode for Android devices in the upcoming Android Q release. Raphael favors a clear demarcation between mobile operating systems (Android) and desktop environments (Chrome operating system).

My take is that perhaps Google is striving to allow the smartphone to serve as the brains for a desktop peripherals, allowing one powerful mobile device to meet all of an individual's needs. Microsoft tried to do this with the Lumia 950 phone and Continuum hardware, without market success.
