Knowledge Organizing Technologies

Trees and Tags is a section from a newsletter Release 1.0 by Esther Dyson, an Internet pundit. This is an extremely clear article on three methods for organizing knowledge:
  1. knowledge trees, such as the Google or Yahoo directories (or the Dewey Decimal system);

  2. faceted classifications, used by some libraries and commerical websites; and,

  3. folksonomies, user-developed indexing, exemplified by "tag" websites such as http://del.icio.us.
