Books on the Web

Google and now Yahoo! have announced efforts to digitize "public domain" books.   Google Print may entail user fees to obtain the full text of books or magazines, while the new Yahoo! Open Content Alliance promises free access to digitized items.

Project Gutenberg has been creating electronic texts of public domain works since 1971, but the entry of well-funded search engines into this effort should surpass the volunteer efforts of the Project Gutenberg team.
