Slavery in Illinois
Logan Jaffe inteviews Darrel Dexter about the history of slavery in Illinois. Dexter reports that even as a French territory slavery occurred in Illinois. Later, in the time of the Northwest Territory until the 1848, slaves brought to Illinois were converted to "indentured servants" for periods as long as 99 years. Then in 1853, a law was passed that barred blacks from migrating to Illinois.
