Solar Storms and the Electric Grid

David Wallace explains how a solar storm created the 1859 Carrington Event. A similar storm today would cause widespread power and communication failures. Wallace calls for research into hardening the electrical grids and components of the internet, as a long-term electrical outage would be a massive disaster.
