Ups and Downs in the Demand for Truck Drivers

Shannon Pettypiece notes that the trucking industry is incredibly cyclical, and moved from a boom period to a bust in mid-2023. The drop in demand for drivers has halved the income of some new independent owner-operators, and some truck drivers are leaving the transportation industry. One can infer that some form of safety net should exist to cushion these operators from the ups and downs of demand.
