Transferring Course Credit to a University

Taylor Swaak reports on university students taking courses from unaccredited firms like StraighterLine, and then transferring the credits to accredited universities . This is not as bad as it sounds, as a organization like StraighterLine that does not grant degrees cannot be accredited. And accredited universities both review the course description to verify that any credits transferred are equivelant to their own offerings, and limit the number of course credits that students may transfer.

What I like about the option of earning inexpensive credits is that it allows students to attempt college work without taking on student loans.

Before taking a course from an unaccredited provider, students should verify the requirements for the credits to transfer to the degree-granting university from which they intend to graduate. To ensure this happens, some universities have agreements with firms like StraighterLine, and university advisots specify which courses the university accepts.
